Hot water tanks

Hot water is often taken for granted until your water heater doesn’t work. It can be very inconvenient to take showers, wash dishes, or wash clothes without hot water. Choosing the right hot water heater depends on many things such as whether you have a large family or teenagers, how often you use the dishwasher, and whether you have a regular, jetted or soaker tub. Knowing how you use your hot water helps you determine what kind of hot water heater will be best for your family. Choosing a water heater that is too small will cause you to run out of hot water and will shorten the water heater’s lifespan as it has to work twice as hard.

Tankless vs. storage tank water heaters is another option to consider. Tankless hot water heaters provide instant, continuous hot water by using gas to heat cold water as needed. Although tankless hot water heaters reduce energy consumption and decrease monthly costs, they will cost more initially to install.

There are three types of water heaters: atmospheric gas water heaters, power vented water heaters, and tankless hot water heaters.

Atmospheric gas water heaters are the most common type of gas water heater. These hot water tanks use indoor air for combustion and natural convection exhausts for gases. Installation costs are low and it generates more hot water at lower operating costs. These gas water heaters are low maintenance and perfect for high altitude locations. They are available in 40, 50, 60 and 80 gallon capacities.

Power vented hot water heaters save more water and energy. The power vented system uses indoor or exterior air for combustion, and a blower exhausts the flue gases. These power vented heaters are low-maintenance and have a long-lasting tank, no filters to change, and several safety features. They also offer flexible installation. They are available in 40, 50, and 60 gallon capacities.

With tankless hot water heaters there is no waiting for the water to warm up or worry about hot water running out.

Humidifiers

Calgary’s climate can be very dry. Keep your home feeling comfortable with a humidifier installation. We’ll size the unit and install it, ensuring you’ll enjoy proper humidity in your home year-round. Ideally your home’s humidity level should stay between 40% and 60%.

Home humidification offers many benefits to you. It alleviates dry skin, helps fight sickness, eases asthma symptoms, relieves dry nasal passages, and prevents cracking and deterioration of furniture and finishes. A humidifier quietly treats your home 24/7, 365 days a year to provide healthy, moist air for you and your family.

We recommend a flow-through humidifier or a steam humidifier for your home.

Flow-through humidifiers have proven to be the most reliable and effective systems in Calgary. They connect directly to the water supply and passively moisten air as it circulates through your furnace. Your furnace sends warm air through a water-soaked vapor pad inside your humidifier where it absorbs additional moisture. Any water that does not evaporate is allowed to trickle away.  There is no standing water (as with a drum humidifier) so there’s little risk of mold or bacterial growth. Newly moistened air is then distributed throughout your home to provide healthy indoor air for you and your family.

After installation, flow-through humidifiers cost just a few dollars a year to keep the humidity in your home within range. To ensure peak performance of your humidifier, change the vapor pad once a year and clean the mineral deposits from the water distribution trough and drain pan with the following solution: ½ cup water and ½ cup vinegar.

Steam humidifiers work by heating a reservoir of water to boiling point, and the steam is allowed to vent out into your air ducts. Steam humidifiers make the most effective and efficient use of water. A humidistat senses the humidity in your home, giving you better control of your humidity level. A steam unit will convert 90% of the water it uses to moisture, and it only takes what it needs from your water supply. The unit does use slightly more power than other types of humidifiers. These rugged humidifiers are fully compatible with today’s sophisticated heating and control systems, providing year-round humidity control automatically.

There are two major furnace types: modulating and two-stage. Both of these models have good and bad aspects, we will help you choose what is right for your home.

Modulating gas furnaces are the most sophisticated, energy-efficient furnaces. They include an automatic fuel valve that varies the amount of fuel delivered to the burner. They usually include a variable-speed blower motor which ramps up and down in response to heating demands. This furnace adjusts its flame and blower minutely according to the heating needs so the true temperature never varies more than 1 or 2 degrees from the thermostat’s target temperature. If comfort and energy savings are most important to you, you will not mind spending more for this high-end furnace.

Two-stage furnaces can operate at two different output levels. Since the low setting is used the majority of the time, a two-stage furnace consumes much less energy than a traditional single-stage furnace. A two-stage furnace is quieter and generates more even heating throughout your home. The longer, slower heating cycle eliminates the kind of rapid warming that many people find uncomfortable from a single-stage furnace. You can also get variable speed blowers with this furnace which offer significant electrical savings.
